LONDON, England - It was a day off from singles at Wimbledon on Wednesday, but some of the biggest WTA stars were among the winners as all four quarterfinals in the doubles took the courts.

Most notably No.1 seeds Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza, who overcame some difficult moments in the first set but managed to get by No.9 seeds Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova, 7-5, 6-3.

Hingis and Mirza are now through to their first Grand Slam semifinal together. This is only their second Grand Slam together - they reached the quarters of the French Open a few weeks ago in their first.

Hingis is looking for her 10th Grand Slam doubles title, having won four Australian Opens, two French Opens, two Wimbledons and a US Open. Mirza is looking for her first Grand Slam doubles title.

Awaiting them in the semifinals will be No.5 seeds Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, who pulled off the biggest surprise of the tournament with a shockilngly-one sided 6-3, 6-2 victory over No.3 seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova, who were going for a Calendar Year Grand Slam this year, having already won the Australian and French Opens. They had been 15-0 in majors this year.

Elsewhere, No.2 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina rallied from 5-1 down in the third and saved match point at 5-4 to beat Cara Black and Lisa Raymond, 6-3, 4-6, 8-6, and No.4 seeds Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic beat No.7 seeds Hsieh Su-Wei and Flavia Pennetta, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Makarova was asked about the comeback against Black and Raymond after the match.

"It was an amazing comeback, actually. I don't know how it happened," the Russian said. "At 1-5 we were returning, so we were down two breaks, but we were just telling each other to play point by point by point, and just see what happens. We didn't want to think about the score. And I think it worked.

"They had a match point at 4-5 in the third set but Elena did an amazing lob that was directly on the line. It was just amazing, and I think in the end we were just the more aggressive team on the court."

"It was amazing," Vesnina added. "To win against such a great team like Lisa and Cara, who are the most experienced doubles team in the game right now, it's just a great win. We're really excited!"
