US Open champion Kim Clijsters made a successful return to action in the first round of the Luxembourg Open on Tuesday.

The Belgian, who is now ranked 18th in the world following her victory at Flushing Meadows last month, cruised into the second round with a 6-2 6-2 victory over American Meghann Shaughnessy.

The second seed took a month off after her dramatic win in New York but showed little sign of rust as she booked a date with Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik in round two.

However, there was no such luck for the top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, the woman she beat in the US Open final.

The Polish-born Dane appeared to be breezing into the second round with a 7-5 5-0 lead over local hope Anne Kremer, but was forced to concede the match after receiving treatment on her hamstring and lower back.

It was Kremer's second lucky break of the day after she received a late call-up to play following the withdrawal of American Melanie Oudin due to a stomach bug.
