Kim Clijsters enjoyed a second victory over Marion Bartoli within two months yesterday, coming from behind to record an impressive 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory over the 14th seed to book her place in the third round of the US Open.

Such has been the level of tennis the Belgian has produced on her return to the tour after two years away and the birth of her first child, that many expected her to steamroller Bartoli, as she had done in the first match of her comeback last month. But the former Wimbledon runner-up had learnt from that defeat and she attacked Clijsters' second serve whenever she could to deservedly take the first set.

But Bartoli's weakness has always been her fitness and movement and after saving three break points in the first game of the second set, Clijsters began to wear her opponent down and in the end, it was not much of a contest. The former world No1 will have been delighted with the way she responded to the first moment of adversity here and though another Belgian, Kirsten Flipkens, stands in her way, a fourth-round clash with Venus Williams beckons.

Kim started off a little shaky in the first set, but got her bearings quickly in the second.

A nice little test. That head to head with Venus is looking more and more likely.

I still think Clijsters will go all the way through to the quarters, and if she makes it there she could take the whole thing.

She is looking impressively strong.

On the men's side Roger Federer had a bit of a struggle with German Simon Greul but pulled through in straight sets to face Llayton Hewitt in the 3rd round.

Should be no contest for Roger.
