Funny things people say

Since this is the last day of February and we're still experiencing cold winter weather (complete with snow!) I thought we could all use something to laugh at.

The routine is familiar: when a student is late or absent from school, a letter from the parents must be supplied for the absence to be excused.

Sometimes such letters suggest that the parents were excused from school too many times in their own youth.

  • "My son is under a doctor's care and should not take P.E. today. Please execute him."

  • "Please excuse Lisa for being absent. She was sick, and I had her shot."

  • "Dear School: Please ekscuse John being absent on Jan. 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, and also 33."

  • "Please excuse Gloria from Jim today. She is administrating."

  • "Please excuse Roland from P.E. for a few days. Yesterday he fell out of a tree and misplaced his hip."

  • "John has been absent because he had two teeth taken out of his face."

  • "Carlos was absent yesterday because he was playing football. He was hurt in the growing part."

  • "Megan could not come to school today because she has been bothered by very close veins."

  • "Chris will not be in school cus he has an acre in his side."

  • "Please excuse Ray Friday from school. He has very loose vowels."

  • "Please excuse Tommy for being absent yesterday. He had diarrhea, and his boots leak."

  • "Irving was absent yesterday because he missed his bust."

  • "Please excuse Jimmy for being. It was his father's fault."

  • "Please excuse Jennifer for missing school yesterday. We forgot to get the Sunday paper off the porch, and when we found it Monday, we thought it was Sunday."

  • "Sally won't be in school a week from Friday. We have to attend her funeral."

  • "My daughter was absent yesterday because she was tired. She spent a weekend with the Marines."

  • "Please excuse Jason for being absent yesterday. He had a cold and could not breed well."

  • "Please excuse Mary for being absent yesterday. She was in bed with gramps."

  • "Gloria was absent yesterday as she was having a gangover."

  • "Please excuse Burma, she has been sick and under the doctor."

  • "Maryann was absent December 11-16, because she had a fever, sore throat, headache, and upset stomach. Her sister was also sick, fever, and sore throat, her brother had a low grade fever and ached all over. I wasn't the best either, sore throat and fever. There must be something going around, her father even got hot last night."

Kim Clijsters gives birth!

Congratulations to retired Belgium tennis star Kim Clijster's her and her husband basketball star Brian Lynch (above) are now the proud parents of a little girl named Jada.

And isn't she a cutie:). Who knows perhaps she'll one day follow in her mother's foot steps;).

Hmm... I wonder if Lindsay Davenport's little son Jagger will ever have a play date with Jada? (what's with all the 'J' names anyway? lol).

Again big congrats to the new parents:).

And the Oscar goes to......

Well, thanks to a swift WGA strike resolution last month The Oscars are going on as planned. As for how entertaining it'll be that has yet to be determined.

Btw. am I the only one who still finds it weird that The Oscars are in February instead of March?. Just as I have done the last two times I will attempt to live blog the awards, so you'll have to excuse me if my thoughts are more then a little disjoint at times;).

Since I don't care about the whole Oscar fashion thing there will be no, who is wearing what oohing and ahhing red carpet commentary from me.

Ok, I will make just one small comment in that regard. What is up with almost everyone wearing depressing black this year?. Hope that's not a sign for the awards themselves.

Well, the show has just started and as I expected there's a mention of the writers strike thankfully without the obvious writing jokes, at least not yet lol.

You gotta love Jon Stewart his humor is so smart 99% of it goes right over the stars heads lol (hence the sporradic laughs). No one can spin political humor better then this guy, good stuff.

Damn, I was hoping "Across the Universe" would grab the costume Oscar *sigh*.
Nice to see "Bourne Ultimatum" get a bunch of awards, love this movie.
Too bad Ellen Page didn't win best lead actress that would have been a nice surprise, but surprise and Oscars have been scarce in recent years.

Wow, waiting around for the most important categories takes forever doesn't it? lol. Or maybe it's that aside from "Juno" and "Ratatouille" I haven't seen (and don't plan to see) any of the other nominated films so I don't really care about most of the other categories.

Ok, is it me or did The Academy completely forget about Brad Renfro in the momorium montage?, I mean yes the guy was a child actor known for only one movie (The Client) but the same can be said for many others. I don't think he or the movie was ever nominated for anything, but that's still no reason not to remember him. Very disrespectful.

Anyone else surprised about "Juno" not winning?. As per usual The Oscars keep up the fine old tradition of picking movies no one but the actors who star in them cares about.

Miraculously they managed to once again stay just under 3.30 hours. Kind of makes you miss the old days of 4 hour Oscar marathons doesn't it? LOL.

Buffy fans rejoice: The 'Scooby Gang' is back!

Yep, you read right the entire cast (and then some!) of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, one of my all time faves (aside from Xena) will reunite on March 20th as part of the 25th annual event sponsored by The Paley Center.

The panel will include: series creator Joss Whedon, Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy) which I admit I was surprised by since she rarely shows up if at all to any of these kinds of events.

And for the first time ever Amber Benson (Tara) and Alyson Hannigan (Willow) will be appearing together (yay!), in all prior instances Amber had scheduling conflicts.

Rounding out the list are Nicholas Brendon (Xander), Emma Caulfield (Anya), Eliza Dushku (Faith), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), Seth Green (Oz), James Marsters (Spike) and Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn).

Hmmm.... no Giles, I guess since it's still early there is still a chance Anthony Stewart Head could be added later.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall at this event *sigh*. Keep those fingers crossed for some YouTube vids;).

BSG Season 4 is nearly upon us!

Well, ok technically we still have some 40 odd days to go (April 4th to be exact). Can you tell I'm excited? lol. Blame it all on those darn season 4 trailers courtesy of YouTube.

Actually I am happy to say that aside from the barest details on the season itself I am virtually spoiler free. Believe me when I say it hasn't been easy. Especially with these new promo shots:

How awesome does Lucy Lawless look as Cylon D'Anna Biers?

Damn, April seems so far away!. lol

"Dancing With the Stars" announces exciting lineup

I checked this show out last year and decided I might give it a shot again depending on whether or not it had a good mix of celebrities. Well, having taken a look at the lineup for this year I am definitely tuning in!.

With names like Priscilla Presley, Marlee Matlin and tennis champ Monica Seles, I would be a fool not to watch. It will be really interesting to see how Seles does in the dancing arena, although as a former athlete I have a feeling she could out-dance them all.

Marissa Jaret Winokur is another surprise, the only thing I know about her aside from the fact that she's an actress/broadway singer is that she's Lucy Lawless's best friend. Hope that means we'll get to see her in the audience:).

Is it March yet?.

Painting woes

I've had an exhausting couple of days. And it all started when a member of my family decided to refresh the walls by painting them.

Yeah, I know brilliant idea right?. Apparently the said family member didn't feel like waiting until the summer because they would rather spend those months out and about in the sun.

So as a result our entire place is a complete and total mess. The living room does look brighter but the paint smell just keeps hanging on. I've had to relocate my poor cockatiel to my room so he wouldn't get sick (it did say the paint was non-toxic but you never know and I certainly wouldn't want to take any chances).

Ideally I would have asked someone to babysit for me but since there was no one who could take him, moving him into another room was the only alternative.

Surprisingly enough he didn't seem too upset about the change a little confused but otherwise well behaved. I actually thought he would go nuts since these birds are very territorial and don't take too well to changing their environment.

As of yesterday evening only the living room and kitchen have been finished. The bedrooms and bathrooms are next. Personally I'm completely against the whole idea, I really don't want to be spending several nights on the living room couch.

Unfortunately I don't have much choice in the matter, since it has to be done eventually. The only thing I'm hoping for is to convince the folks to delay painting my room until it gets warmer. Because really who does that in the middle of winter?.

But as you've probably guessed by now convincing parental units can prove quite difficult once they've made up their minds. Basically I'm in the expecting the worst, hoping for the best mind set at the moment.

To make matters worse I'm functioning on very little sleep due to unexpected visitors spending the night and a bird who's an early riser. Family Day is looking better and better.....

Happy Valentine's Day

To all those who are lucky enough to celebrate it with someone special. As a single person this is one holiday I don't celebrate, but unlike most single people I'm not bitter about it;). I figure my time will come one of these days.

Though at the rate I'm going I may be old and grey LOL. Anyhoo, hope all of you have a good one;).

News on the fate of the t.v. season

Now that the WGA strike might finally be coming to a close (assuming everyone agrees on the tentative deal today).

There's one thing on every t.v. watchers mind. Which shows will and won't comeback this season.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

What We're Hearing:
The crown jewel of the Sci Fi Channel should finish out its fourth and final season, but per writer Jane Espenson, it's almost certain that, schedule-wise, the story will be split into two separate miniseasons. The show completed 14 episodes before the strike hit, and at least the first 10 will air beginning Apr. 4. The second batch could premiere in the fall or even sometime in 2009.

I got all excited until I read the part that said they were going to split the season in two. Which will mean more waiting *grumble grumble*. Although I suppose as long as we get a full season like the show deserves then I'll be happy.

BONES

What We're Hearing: One Bones castmember tells us the strike was "very emotional and surreal" and that while they don't yet know how many more episodes they might produce this season, things look good for a return to the set. Another castmember tells us: "I would assume that production would start back in two weeks or so." However, sources tell us there is no decision yet on whether Bones will go back into production this season.

This news is not so good I was looking forward to some more Booth/Bones action. I guess there's no choice but to hope and wait.

GREY'S ANATOMY

What We're Hearing: Grey's will go back into production this season and is expected to produce a handful of new episodes to air in April and May. And yes, Josh Jackson is expected to finally fulfill his guest-spot duties as Cristina's love interest. So, yes, there is a god.

To be honest I'm kinda split on this show, I watch it but only for certain characters (like Izzy and Christina). I can't stand whiny Meredith. Most times I could take it or leave it.

Melanie in Decatur, Georgia: Thank you for all your hard work over the weekend to bring us strike updates! I loved all the info. Still, I'm wondering, what's the deal with Bionic Woman? Think it'll come back now that the strike's ending?
First, I have to give a big, fat shout-out to my cohort in crime Jennifer Godwin, who is without gluteus maximus muscles today because she worked them all off over the weekend, tirelessly hunting down show runners and sources and such for our strike coverage. I lurve her. As for Bionic, well, she's not looking quite so butt-kicky these days. Although show runner Jason Katims says this of the show's fate, "All I know is there were talks right before the strike started about continuing Bionic," sadly, according to multiple Peacock net sources, Bionic has already gone bye-bye for good. But fans should know that volume one of the series comes out on DVD Mar. 18.

This was to be expected, because let's be honest even though Michelle Ryan is a great actress the only thing saving that show was Sarah Corvus (Katee Sackhoff).

When she left the rating plummeted. It's too bad, I thought it had potential. But perhaps the show took a little too long to find it's niche.

I only listed the shows I'm interested in so if you would like to see a complete list you can click here.

If I could just find out something on ER and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles I would be a happy viewer.

ETA: After 100 days the WGA strike is officially over (yay!!). In June it'll be the Actors Guild turn LOL.

Isaac Hanson to be a father again!!

Isaac and his wife Nikki with son Everett
On February 8, 2008 Zac Hanson confirmed at the Conway and Whitman's show that Isaac and Nikki are expecting their second child. No word was said about a due date or how far along Nikki is.
Wikipedia.org

Yep, that's right it seems the Hanson brothers just can't stop making babies LOL. Along with Zac's wife expecting in May this will be baby #6. Hmmm....could Ike be trying to break Taylor's record? lol.

So this will make it the 12th Hanson member overall. Wow, either their wives really love having babies or they skipped the sex ed class on contraception LOL. Or maybe they're just trying to break their dad's record of 7.

In all seriousness though, congrats (albeit a little early) to Ike and his wife Nikki. With 4 other siblings at least there is no shortage of baby sitters :D.

Across the Universe Review

I raved about this movie several times last year. Well, I finally bought the dvd (which came out today), and I have to say it was even better then I expected.

Since I have already expressed my love for the soundtrack in one of my previous posts, I will talk about my favourite scenes and impressions of the movie instead.

The combination of 3-D visual effects, puppetry and dance give it a great theatrical feel. And of course it doesn't hurt that Julie Taymor actually comes from the theatre. The underwater kiss, sliding in the bowling alley, and the army recruitment scene were among my absolute favourites (superb choreography and visual effects).

The fact that all the actors sing the songs live (instead pre-recorded lip-syncing) provided a real emotional depth and really helped to sell the movie and it's characters. Jim Sturge's (Jude) voice makes you believe in everything he's singing.

Joe Anderson (Max), despite not being a singer (like most the cast) does a marvelous job. I've listened to his version of "Hey Jude" over a hundred times now and I still can't get enough. Both these guys voices posses a sort of raw venerability that just draws you in.

As for the women I really liked the contrast between the soft soothing tones of Evan Rachel Wood (Lucy) and the raspy Janis Joplin-like quality of Dana Fuchs (Sadie).

The only scene in the film I wasn't really fond of was the circus bit. Although it looked visually stunning and artistic, it felt unnecessary. I don't know, I didn't really get it.

Before I saw this movie I read a lot of mixed reviews a lot of people said they walked out either at the beginning or middle of the film. And a lot of them apparently walked out during "Dear Prudence". Which I really don't know why since that number was absolutely awesome.

I honestly don't know what's wrong with those people, the singing was superb. I guess some people are real sticklers for originals, (especially when it comes to the Beatles).

There were also a lot of people who complained the movie didn't have much of a plot. It does, but since it's a musical the plot is loosely entwined in the songs.

Actually the focus is more on themes, like love, peace, etc. I think if the movie had a separate plot along with the songs it would have been a completely different animal, not too mention extremely long lol. So I prefer this version.

I honestly can't say enough about this film, simply put it's a mastery of visuals and music. So if you haven't seen it yet (shame on you), go out and rent it!. I guarantee it's one you'll enjoy again and again.

Internet addiction funny and true

Found these on the Xena Online Community Board (where I spend way too much time lol) and I just couldn't resist sharing them here.

"Casual Friday" is my favourite LOL.
