Fox gives Joss Whedon's 'Dollhouse' the boot :(

This has been a busy week for cancellations. The latest addition to the TV graveyard: Dollhouse.

According to multiple insiders, Fox has informed Joss Whedon that it will not be ordering additional installments of his low-rated drama beyond the current 13-episode order. On the bright side, the network still plans to burn off the remaining unaired episodes beginning in December. Hey, it’s something.

Dollhouse has been averaging a mere 3 million viewers this season. Last season — when fan support, together with significant budget cuts, helped it to get an odds-defying second-year pickup — the show averaged 4.7 million.

Bottom line: Dollhouse is lucky it ever saw a second season. Remember that when you’re posting your eulogies below.

UPDATE: Whedon just posted the following statement on Whedonesque.com: “I don’t have a lot to say. I’m extremely proud of the people I’ve worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you’ll agree in the coming months. I’m grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back and put it on again. I’m off to pursue Internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I’ve read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you’ll know what my next project is. But for now, there’s a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear. Thank you all for your support, your patience, your excellent adverts. See you again.”

Let's face it as much as I didn't want this to happen I knew it was only a matter of time.

It's too bad though once again a brilliant show got killed before it really got the chance to hit it's stride.

At least Fox is actually airing the rest of the eps that were filmed, that's something to be grateful for I guess.

Whatever Joss plans to do next I hope it doesn't involve anything with Fox.

Psst, Joss here is an idea next time screw the networks and just go with cable ;).

'Dollhouse' picked up for second season!

UPDATED: In a stunning move, sources say Fox has renewed Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse” for next fall.

The official announcement will not be made until Monday at the network's upfront presentation, but sources confirm a deal has been struck for another 13 episodes. Fox plans to continue the show on Fridays next fall.

The low-rated series was last seen given up for dead by the media in a field somewhere.

But the show's DVR numbers are huge (averaging a 40% bump), online streaming is strong. It’s a sci-fi show, which tend to bring in strong ancillary revenue such as DVD sales for sister-company studio 20th TV. And it’s said that Fox execs rather like the series, especially the latter half of the season. Besides, a show airing in the fall on Fox is a bit like running in midseason on most networks -- it’s not the network's strongest part of the year and maybe ... maybe ...

All right, fine.

The move is tougher to explain than most, especially based on the show's ratings. A “Dollhouse” pickup is a shock, an underdog comeback that blows away NBC’s will-they-or-won’t-they hand-wringing over “Chuck” (psst, they almost certainly will). In fact, "Dollhouse" might very well be the lowest-rated in-season scripted drama to ever get a renewal on a major broadcast network. Almost certainly if based on where the show concluded -- a 1.0 among adults 18-49.

Basically this is a case of a bunch of minor decision-making factors successfully ganging up on the biggest factor (ratings). In addition to DVD sales, streaming and DVR influences, Fox received some serious budget concessions from 20th TV and Whedon to continue the show, with 20th now shouldering a greater portion of the load.

Another factor was the show's unaired 13th episode, which Whedon shot on a shoestring budget for the "Dollhouse" first season DVD set. Whedon presented it to the network as an example of how "Dollhouse" can achieve a high-quality production with a lesser budget.

The renewal also means Fox is bringing back all three of its freshman dramas for a second season -- "Fringe," "Lie to Me" and "Dollhouse" -- which is a nice boast in challenging year for broadcasters.

Along with NBC renewing low-rated "Friday Night Lights," and strongly considering modestly performing "Chuck," and the CW stations considering bringing back very weakly rated "Reaper," there's seeming trend this spring toward networks looking beyond live-viewing ratings when contemplating the fate of shows with passionate fanbases that they can monetize in non-traditional ways.

Last year, in the wake of CBS canceling fan favorites "Jericho" and "Moonlight," the sense was that vocal minorities could no longer sway the suits.

This year, cult TV shows have been like creatures in a George Romero movie; you can never trust that they're dead.

I think I'll hold off doing the celebratory happy dance until the official word on Monday (I'll just do an internal one for now).

I was actually going to say that FOX is finally wising up, but then I read the part where they decided to keep the show on in the Friday timeslot. So never mind. Can't have everything I guess.

Also very happy to hear Better Off Ted got a pick up from ABC as well (woo-hoo!).

Now if we could just get the word on Sarah Connor Chronicles 3rd season pick-up my t.v. schedule will be complete *crosses fingers*.

BTVS Cast: Where Are They Now?

You just can't keep a good Slayer down. Recent rumours suggest that Buffy Summers and the remnants of her Scooby Gang could well be heading for cinema screens in the near future - over five years since Joss Whedon's legendary television series concluded. But do the actors really need to exhume their old characters for a career boost? Cult Spy looks at how the Sunnydale dwellers, or at least those who weren't killed off early, have fared since leaving the wonderful world of wooden stakes.

Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy)

The blonde bombshell's desire to move on to pastures new was often cited as the reason for Buffy ending, but Gellar didn't initially stray too far from the show's supernatural leanings. 2004 horror film The Grudge, in which Gellar played the lead, was a major box office smash to go along with the commercial success of her two spooky Scooby-Doo flicks.

Since then though, Gellar has been the box office equivalent of a Buffy Big Bad. Not even playing a pornstar in Southland Tales - director Richard Kelly's hugely anticipated Donnie Darko follow-up - could lure in the punters. Other flops followed in the shape of The Air I Breathe and Suburban Girl, so it wasn't much of a surprise to hear that she's planning a small screen retreat in HBO's The Wonder Maladys, a drama that deals with parental loss, in 2009.

In need of Buffy movie career boost?: Probably

David Boreanaz (Angel)

There was still a year left of LA-based spinoff show Angel to run after Buffy concluded in 2003, and it looked like Boreanaz couldn't avoid juicy steaks as well as he dodged wooden stakes - for the pounds piled on. He soon regained his old trim physique and won the lead as FBI Agent Seeley Booth in forensic television drama Bones.

The show, which attracts sizeable audience numbers stateside, is currently in its fourth season. Less impressive is Boreanaz's film career. He's made several cinematic entities post-Buffy, but how many can you name? Exactly.

In need of Buffy movie career boost?: Not really

Alyson Hannigan (Willow)

Hannigan perhaps used one of Willow's spells to ensure she became a staple of hit American teen flicks shortly after Buffy ended, with key parts in the American Pie trilogy and Date Movie. A recurring part in Veronica Mars, which shared many traits with a certain Sunnydale-based show, kept her fans happy. However, a starring role in CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother has propelled her into the limelight again. Now in its fourth season and bolstered by a couple of Britney Spears cameos, the programme attracts an impressive 10 million viewers.

In need of Buffy movie career boost?: Not right now

Nicholas Brendon (Xander)

With his disarming smile and comic timing, it's a surprise that Brendon has failed so spectacularly to capitalise on his Buffy success. A vehicle entitled Kitchen Confidential lasted only four episodes before getting the chop, while battles with the bottle didn't help his career prospects.

A couple of very obscure movies have helped things to tick along, plus a guest appearance last year in mainstream TV show Criminal Minds did at least jog the memory of a few viewers as to his existence on the planet.

In need of Buffy movie career boost?: Yes, yes, yes

Anthony Head (Giles)

The housewives' favourite has swapped the libraries and magic shops of Sunnydale for a range of BBC projects that have certainly raised his mainstream profile in the United Kingdom and finally laid to rest the 'Gold Blend ad man' stigma. Currently playing the callous yet occasionally compassionate King Uther Pendragon in Merlin, the legend turned a few heads with his recurring roles as the poor Prime Minister in Little Britain.

Head also fronted drama The Invisibles and excellently portrayed shapeshifting Krillitane Mr. Finch in the Doctor Who episode 'School Reunion'. However, his big screen ambitions took a hit when scheduling issues forced Tim Burton to massively cut down his role in Sweeney Todd, while the curiously titled Repo! The Genetic Opera has struggled to secure decent distribution - despite the on-screen pairing of Head and Paris Hilton!

In need of Buffy movie career boost? Nope

Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn)

The cute actress starred in gross-out teen 'comedy' Eurotrip in 2004, trading the innocence of Buffy's younger sister for a far more sexualised part. Since then, she's predominantly focused on television roles that are similarly detached from the good-natured Dawn.

Most notably, she played a popstar brat in several episodes of the acclaimed Six Feet Under and a nasty cow in Gossip Girl. This partially makes up for her appearance in the catastrophic movie remake of Black Christmas, although hopes are still high for a big screen career as she stars alongside Zac Efron in upcoming flick 17 Again.

In need of Buffy movie career boost? Definitely maybe

James Marsters (Spike)

Since sparing his follicles from more peroxide, Marsters has used his charisma (not Carpenter!) in two key cult roles that strongly echo the detestable but loveable ambiguity of Spike. First up was the part of baddie Brainiac in Smallville, followed by Captain John in Torchwood.

Despite his advancing years (which doesn't bode well for playing a non-aging vampire), Marsters still has the old swagger. He also played a supporting role in the movie P.S. I Love You, regularly tours with his band and can next be seen as the baddie, under heavy make-up, in the film Dragonball.

In need of Buffy movie career boost? A little push would help

Eliza Dushku (Faith)

Randy rogue slayer Faith was one character screaming out for an Angel-style spinoff, but instead Dushku graduated to short-lived series Tru Calling - a tenuously named show about a morgue worker called Tru speaking to dead people. A similarly morbid project was 2003 horror film Wrong Turn - a moderate commercial success bolstered by Dushku donning a tight, white vest in tru Bruce Willis style.

A string of lesser profile projects followed, including stage roles and video game appearances. However, her career received a massive boost when Buffy creator Joss Whedon snapped her up as the lead in his new (and much delayed) Dollhouse series.

In need of Buffy movie career boost? The answer lies in the Dollhouse

Emma Caulfield (Anya)

Okay, so events in the Buffy finale might not bode well for her return, but stranger things have happened on the show. Unlike several of her co-stars, Caulfield managed to steer clear of roles in other cult shows - although this did involve staking herself in the foot when she turned down offers to audition for the roles of Starbuck and Number Six in the superb Battlestar Galactica.

She's since admitted her frankly fracking crazy decision. Still, she did star in horror film Darkness Falls, which did soar to the heights of first place on the US box office.

In need of Buffy movie career boost? Yes, but not as much as her former on-screen boyfriend.

Nice to get somewhat of an update on the Scooby Gang. It's quite sad that poor Nicholas Brendon's career is not fairing well.

He's such a great comedic actor, lots of wasted potential. Hopefully someone will realize that soon and cast him in something decent.

More
Criminal Minds may not be a bad move.

Alyson, David, James, Tony and even Michelle, seem to have better careers post Buffy then Buffy herself (ah, irony).

I'm hoping Eliza will join that list come next year with the premiere of Dollhouse (fingers crossed).

I would also really like to see Emma Caulfield's career get a bigger boost, because she's another wasted talent.

Oh, and whatever happened to Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia)?. Last time I saw her she was on
Veronica Mars and How I Met Your Mother. What has she done since then I wonder.

Same goes for Kristine Sutherland (Joyce Summers aks Buffy's mom), is she even still acting? (if anyone knows the answer feel free to leave a comment).

Also it's too bad the author of this article omitted Amber Benson (Tara) who was on the show for 2 and a half years, because she continues to be the busiest cast member.

She has all kinds of different movies (ones she stars in and ones she directs) as well as writing graphic novels, and a whole host of other projects (that I can't remember at the moment). On second thought maybe that's why she was omitted in the first place.

Brand spankin' new "Dollhouse" trailer

Here's a little treat for all Joss Whedon fans out there. A brand new trailer for his new show Dollhouse.

Despite the supposed scrapped pilot and the changes made to this show.

I'm still just as intrigued by it. And I'm totally tuning in to watch it in January.

On a completely unrelated (but very big) side note, I don't usually write about or reveal my political views on the blog.

But since this is an extremely huge day in U.S. history, I feel compelled to do so just this once.

And congratulate Senator Barack Obama who (at the time I write this) has been elected as the 44th President of the United States!! :).

The significance being that he's the first ever African American President.

No matter how many times I type or read that it's still hard to believe.

I realize I could have made this into an entire post all on it's own, but I'm sure plenty of other bloggers will have it covered ;).

A momentous change has been made today, one that I hope brings good things for not only the U.S. but the rest of the world as well.

I don't know what I feel the greatest relief over the outcome of the election itself, or the fact that it's finally over! *lol*. Admit it, you were thinking it too.

Eliza Dushku "Nurses" pilot

In March of last year I mentioned a little show on the FOX network called Nurses starring Eliza Dushku.

I've actually been wondering whatever happened to that show, but with all the excitement, agonizing and nail biting over Dollhouse it sort of slipped my mind till today.

Sadly the show never made it into tv-land, but it turns out a pilot was made and thanks to the wonder that is YouTube (and a tip by the good folks at Whedonesque) you can check out the entire thing.

I am off to do just that. Unfortunately there is no embed available for the video so you'll have to click on the link.

Enjoy ;).

Dollhouse @ Comic-Con

This may be old news to some, but I thought I would share it anyway. Here is a fun clip of Eliza, Joss and Tahmoh at the Comic-Con in July.

Joss Whedon, Eliza Dushku @ Comic-Con

Just a couple of videos I found of Joss, Eliza and Tahmoh Penikett (of Battlestar Galactica fame) discussing Dollhouse.

The second vid is a little hard to understand at times due to background noise, but you still get the jist of it.

And if that isn't enough go to EW.com to watch another awesome pre-Comic-Con video interview of all three.

I can already tell Tahmoh and Eliza will work well togather, they have great chemistry.

Just for fun some "Dollhouse" spoilers

Eliza Dushku and the mastermind Joss Whedon

Here is a little something to tie you over until the Dollhouse Comic-Con panel stuff starts trickling in.

It's an article definitely worth a read (no worries it doesn't give too much away).

I'm sure I've said this before but, I can't wait to see another Joss Whedon creation on my t.v.

Roll on 2009!!.

Joss Whedon/Eliza Dushku Dollhouse Promo

I'm sure all of you Dollhouse fans have already seen this, but I decided to post it anyway for those who may have missed it or may not be aware of it.

Plus let's face it, Joss and Eliza = too damn cute and funny to ignore;).

Another network deal another Buffy alumni

Yes that's right another former Buffy star has signed on for a new t.v. series. This time it is Faith herself Eliza Dushku.

She'll be starring in Fox's upcoming show a comedy/drama called Nurses. Dushku will be playing a main character named Eve. Let's hope it's nothing like Scrubs. 'Cause I'm not a big fan of that show and in my opinion one of them is enough.

I'm actually surprised Eliza has decided to sign a deal with Fox again after how her last show on this very network got killed. Tru Calling was a show I personally loved but, I guess not enough people were watching it. Let's hope Nurses doesn't suffer the same fate.

People need to start paying attention to Eliza she has some great acting chops that extend well beyond her character of Faith.
